Our Story:

The Kinderhook Knitting Mill is a community-minded space in the heart of Kinderhook that brings together food, art, and design in an 1870s textile mill. The Knitting Mill was conceived in the heart of the pandemic by two close friends, restaurateur Yen Ngo and artist Darren Waterston, who shared a desire to nourish together with food and art.

The businesses housed in the Knitting Mill, almost entirely owned and operated by women and people of color, run the gamut from an Indonesian-inspired restaurant to an art gallery to a curated general store. The ethos of The Mill is one of cooperation and collaboration that is evident in the connective thread that ties everyone together in the shared goal of cultivating a thriving village center to nourish the community.

Anchoring the Knitting Mill are The Aviary, The Nest, and Morningbird. The three eateries, helmed by chef Hannah Wong, represent different aspects of the culinary program at the Knitting Mill. Our all-day cafe, Morningbird, offers a rotating selection of housemade breakfast pastries & casual Southeast Asian dishes for lunch, along with a retail section curated to support Asian-American & women-identified makers. The Aviary (Summer 2022) will operate exclusively for dinner five nights-a-week, and feature Dutch and Indonesian-influenced dishes that highlight produce from our Hudson Valley farm partners. A more focused menu of small plates & finger food based on The Aviary’s menu is available at The Nest along with an emphasis on cocktails in an intimate lounge setting.
